At East Park Academy, Roots and Shoots is a SEND provision for some of our children. It focuses on language development, communication and independence. This provision is bespoke to each of the children’s needs and is a small class of children with a high ratio of adult support.
The days in Roots and Shoots are similar to those in mainstream with Reading, Writing and Maths being taught in the mornings and foundation subjects in the afternoon. Due to some of our children’s complex needs, our younger children learn through the use of different practical equipment, direct teaching and child initiated activities, very much like our EYFS setting.
All children in the setting have targets to work towards taken directly from their EHCP (Education, Health and Care Plan.) Most of our children have direct input from other agencies such as Speech and Language Therapist, Occupational Therapists and Educational Psychologists and the staff work closely with them to ensure the children are supported effectively.
The flexibility of the provision means that many of our children access Roots and Shoots at different times of the day and spend some of their day in mainstream classes for different subjects.
